WRITING DIALOGUE
In ‘looking back’, I meant to explore how people and characters use dialogue to deflect on what they truly want to say. There is power in the un-said and in reading between the lines. In this excerpt below, the two characters are on a date, yet there is a clear misalignment of their states of mind: one is pretending that everything is alright, while the other intends to face their problem head-on.
This other excerpt is a continuation of this same conversation. The personalities clash harder.
In this last excerpt, the two characters reach a dead-end and no longer understand each other. While one displays sensibility and level-headedness, the other is in a clear state of anguish; although it’s not said outwardly, her rough and almost rude words indicate that she hides her true emotions.
