WRITING DIALOGUE
His MJ is composed of 66k words, so about 240 pages. A small book! I wrote every single word, but the most fun thing to write was, above all, its dialogue.
I used dialogue the most during open-heart conversations. On the right is a short snippet of a talk between the protagonist and his aunt. My goal with this conversation was to show a heavy, yet healed past between them, without going into details. Happiness is found in the simple things, and here, the segment ends on a literal piece of cake.
In this other dialogue on the left, my goal was to quickly introduce a new character’s background and personality through his conversation with others: his best friend Elisa, and a regular of his coffee shop Marty. MJ is stubborn and realistic, and Elisa is an idealist like Marty.
Two main themes are being presented here:
Michael-James’ relationship with his family and his feelings about it;
Michael-James’ dream job, modeling.
This, along with a third theme we end on (Michael-James’ love life), are the drive of the story. Those themes will be repeated regularly throughout the work, but the fondations of it are being built in this short excerpt.
