The prompt that was given was a photograph by Nan Goldin, from her “All By Myself” serie. From it, I imagined the story of a woman who was stuck in a constant state of numbness, and who tried to fill the void with her family life, her prostitution, and night baths.
My goal was to write the prose as numb and unfeeling as the protagonist was feeling. Hence the absence of quotation marks, of line breaks, and of commas. I wanted the text to feel almost boring to read, its descriptions so uneventful that even if something shocking was to happen, it would be stripped of emotion.
